Chinese Chestnut

Castanea mollissima

Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima) Non native

At some 30 feet high, this is one of three trees whose shade creates a woodland sort of environment. Apparently the Asian chestnut species is responsible for the demise of the American Chestnut. Needless to say, it’s a beautiful tree supporting birds, insects, squirrels and me if I’m lucky to get any nuts. Non native. Pre-existing.
